Please note the following times and dates for your seminar groups over the next four weeks. Each group has a number that goes from 1 to 7. Each name has four numbers after each. For instance Stephenson D has 1, 2, 3 and 4. This means that he/she is in seminar group 1 this week coming, group 2 week commencing Monday 26 November etc. NB You WILL change group each Monday or Tuesday. Do not expect to be with the same people at the same time each week. Do NOT turn up with little or no work. I fully expect to see an approx. 8 to 10 hours hard labour in evidence at each seminar. Your design knowledge and experience is expanding as the semester draws ever closer to a conclusion – your work is becoming more intelligent and more cohesive – my marking is getting harder – and you are all getting better!! The following times are when each group will be meeting with me: Group 1 Mondays at 1pmGroup 2 Mondays at 1.45Group 3 Mondays at 2.30Group 4 Tuesdays at 9.15Group 5 Tuesdays at 10.00Group 6 Tuesdays at 10.45Group 7 Tuesdays at 11.30 STUDENT GROUP Nos. Change of hand in date!!!!
December 29, 2006As you are aware you have an exam on the Friday – 12 January 2007. This puts extra pressure on you with regard to the hand in of all the work you have for me. So I now want you to hand in all work on the Monday 15 January 2007. The work will be handed in between 10 am and 12 noon at Room MQ218. You will NOT hand the work in at any other place.
Each piece of work will be clearly marked with your name ( not your student number) and module code. The two practical projects will be handed in with all research and development work in a clearly distinctive folder and will be annotated accordingly. No plastic bags will be accepted. No work over A3 will be accepted.
The report shall be over 6,000 words in length, double spaced with a margin of 10 centimetres at least on the left hand side. This report will also be clearly marked with your name and module code.
No work will be accepted after 12 noon. The two hour hand in time will be treated as examination timetable i.e. if your hand in is late then, as in an examination, you will have missed the hand in and will have failed accordingly.
No work will be accepted if handed in anywhere other that MQ218.
TWO IMPORTANT NOTICES
November 30, 20061
Outside my office door is a list of times that you may see me. There are over 100 slots over the next week. I shall add at least ten more to week beginning 11 December. It is expected that you will make an effort to put your name down at least once. I will therefore be able to give you marks for the introduction and a little feedback.
2
The Design, Presentation and Report hand in is now changed to FRIDAY 12 JANUARY. This does give you extra time.
I have noted that a couple of students have attempted to write an introduction for a Literature Review instead of a report. You know who you are and I hope that you realise that you are only making the report more difficult for yourselves. To date with a Lit Review and Intro most of will have between 3,000 and 3,500 words already for the final hand in. So… you are halfway there!

Lateness has become a habit with some of the group. May I remind you that it is extremely rude and disruptive to arrive late. From here on those that do arrive more than five minutes late will NOT be asked to show their work.
Design, Presentation and Report
To date it has been heartening to see the progress of the class within this module. Glenda and I have seen a growing of confidence within presentation and we believe that this augurs well for the future. Please keep up the good work.
For this Monday – 28th November – we are expecting to see a short presentation (4 slides max) on your introduction. There is also a hand in of approx 1,000 words to include your Abstract (no more than 200 words), the introduction (800 – 1,200 words) and a contents page. This will put pressure on you to make a good start to the report – remember too that some initial research(of a visual nature) should already have been started. The Introduction will be taken away and feedback given. If academic/scientific writing style is not adhered to the work will NOT be assessed. The Introduction is worth 10% of the module marks.
The afternoon groups will change slightly this week so be aware that there will be a change. You will be notified of all groups on Monday morning.
IMPORTANT MEETING
November 20, 2006Next Tuesday (November 28) you will attend a meeting in MQ213 at 10.15. We shall be discussing next semester module DES512 – Major Project – and answering any queries you have.
DO NOT MISS THIS MEETING
Monday 20th November
November 16, 2006The morning session will have to be postponed I am afraid as I have been called to a rather important meeting.
The afternoon session will run as last week with the same groups working with both Glenda and myself, in the same rooms and same times as last week.
The presentation this week for design, presentation and report will be a four minute expose of your bibliography for your report. Virtually no one was correct in carrying out the bibliographical aspect of the report – this gives you the chance to do it right!
Please see Lit Review section as to how the section should be accredited.
The presentation will be by PowerPoint and should not be any longer than 3 or
4 slides.
In the meantime you should have started writing up your full report with an introduction already started – you will be asked to present this in the coming weeks.
The only person I DO want to see on Monday morning is John Devine. Please come to reception of Foyle Arts for 9.15.
Next semester
November 13, 2006Some very important information for you.
Please check out the website below for information regarding the module for next semester. You have already got some idea as to the project you are thinking of working on (via design, presentation and report)…the next module takes you further down the route of practical work and solving the problem.

Monday 13 November
November 8, 2006Design, Presentation and Report
will take place from 1.15. You will be placed in small groups of 3 to 4 people. You will EACH make a powerpoint presentation (of no more than 4 minutes) explaining the target audience for your current project i.e. the one you have started researching and have already produced a Literature Review for. You will see below a list of ‘demographics’ with which to help you identify the audience. The groups will be notified on Monday morning as to who they are with and to which rooms they must go to.
Innovation and Concept
Starts at 9.15 this Monday and the groups will be the same as for Week 5 (see October 16th). Times will be:
Group One 9.15
Group Two 9.45
Group Three 10.15
Group Four 10.45 (to include Simon Cassidy)
Group Five 11.15
Group Six 11.45
Group Seven 9.15 (joins with Group One)
Group Eight 9.45 (joins with Group Two)
You will have already started brief three and will bring with you a series of research drawings/ideas etc. Please do not come to the seminar with nothing to hand. You MUST have started the brief!!
